Mother’s Day is right around the corner and as I was pondering on my life as a mom raising my children, and reflecting back on my own childhood with my mother, I realized that a lot of what comes out of my mouth as a parent sounds just like my mother!! I know that my mom was shaping and molding me into the person that I am today (I think!) and that I was trying to do the same with my kids. But how did she do that? With Momisms, of course!
What are Momisms? Well, all moms use them. They are those quotes that we say over and over again to scold and teach our children. We fall back on the ones we know because we know they worked on us……maybe not when mom wanted them to, but eventually we grew into the terrific person that we are today!
It’s not hard to understand why Momisms stand the test of time. They transcend into every race, language and culture and prove to the world that moms are caring, full of love and concern, and of course, all knowing! Mother Knows Best!!
Here are some of my favorite Momisms:
I just want what’s best for you.
Money does not grow on trees.
Eat your vegetables so that you will grow up to be strong.
Drink your milk so you will have strong bones.
How do you know you don’t like it, you’ve never tasted it.
Don’t talk with your mouth full.
I am not your maid.
If I talked to my mother like you talk to me…..
What part of NO! did you not understand?
I’ll treat you like an adult when you start acting like one.
Don’t pick your nose.
Don’t put that in your mouth, you don’t know where it’s been.
What if everyone jumped off a cliff? Would you do it?
You are not going anywhere dressed like that!
I don’t care what other kids do….I’m not their mom.
Someday your face will stick like that.
Go to your room and think about what you’ve done.
Don’t make me come in there!
If you’re bored, I can always find something for you to do.
You’re the oldest; you should know better.
Always wear clean underwear. You never know when you will be in an accident.
This is why we cannot have nice things.
If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times!
I hope that when you grow up, you have kids just like you.
If you fall out of that tree and break your leg, don’t come running to me.
Be careful!
Why didn’t you call me?
There’s no use crying over spilled milk.
Who do you think you are talking to?
Don’t go out with a wet head, you will catch a cold.
Watch your mouth, young lady (or young man).
I’m doing this for your own good!
Someday you will thank me for this!
When you have your own house, you can make the rules.
I’ve got eyes in the back of my head and I can see everything.
Wait until your father gets home…
Are you listening to me?
And my favorite: Because I said so!!
These are just a few of the Momisms that I know and every family has their own. These words of wisdom will ring down through the generations to come and one day we all come to understand that Mother really does know best!!
Please feel free to share with us some of your favorite Momisms. We would love to hear them and maybe even add them to our growing list! 🙂
