EASY HEALTHY SNACKS FOR KIDS
While it is important to make three square meals a day for your children, in between mealtime children need healthy snack options as well. However, with the amount of time that goes into planning and preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner, the last thing any busy mom wants to do is spend a ton of time planning out snacks as well. Because of this, many busy moms opt for quick, pre-made, unhealthy snacks to give their children throughout the day. Don’t let your hectic schedule cause you to give your children food that is bad for their health.
This Take-Along Treat is the perfect kid-friendly snack. Not only are the ingredients in this recipe things that many moms already have in their pantries, it’s also a satisfying mix of sweet and salty that your kids will love. In less than 30 minutes you can make a healthier treat that will last on your shelf and that your kids can take anywhere. Try this healthy snack recipe to show your kids that you can snack and be healthy at the same time!
Take-Along Treat
Ingredients:
- No-stick cooking spray
- 2 bags microwave popcorn
- 1 cup lightly salted peanuts
- 1 pack dried mixed fruit bits
- 1 cup honey
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray two 15×10-inch shallow baking pans with cooking spray.
- Prepare popcorn according to package directions and remove all of the unpopped kernels.
- Place the popped corn, peanuts and fruit bits in large bowl.
- Combine the honey, water and lemon juice in medium, heavy saucepan. Bring the ingredients to a boil and continue boiling for two minutes, stirring constantly.
- Immediately pour the hot mixture over the popcorn mixture and toss gently to coat evenly. Divide the mixture between pans.
- Bake for 15 minutes, stirring every five minutes. Remove the pans from the oven and stir one last time. Allow the mixture to cool before serving. Store your homemade Take-Along Treats in a tightly sealed container and enjoy!
Tips:
- Let your kids help make this recipe. Allow them to mix the popcorn, fruit and peanuts together in a large bowl. Use this cooking experience as an opportunity to teach your children about eating healthy.
- Buy blank cupcake liners and let your children decorate them while you prepare the Take-Along Treats. Serve the treats in your children’s personalized cupcake liners.
- If your child has a peanut allergy, try adding granola clusters instead of nuts for extra crunch and nutrients.
