Recently I was sent two new books by Author Suzy Liebermann to review, and I was quite impressed. Ms. Lieberman is a well traveled author, with two books in print and four more in the process of being printed. Instead of just entertaining kids, Ms. Lieberman focuses on teaching positive attitudes, character, life skills and ecological awareness through the story’s hero, Hugo the Happy Starfish. There are fourteen attitudes that the books will encompass, (Appreciation, Commitment, Cofidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiousity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence, Integrity, Optimism, Patience, Respect and Tolerance.) The books also include an introduction to the Spanish language with vocabulary assistance at the end.
I read, “The Secret To Happiness” and “The Last Bully”. Both books were well written with beautiful and very colorful illustrations on every page. Both books included a page at the end allowing kids to draw a picture of themselves practicing the particular attitude and encouraging them to think and discuss the lesson learned.
Hugo the Happy Starfish and The Secret to Happiness was about Hugo the Starfish on a quest for happiness. Hugo wants to find true happiness and manages to find it for a day, then a month, but can never find lasting happiness. The book takes us on his journey as he finds and loses his happiness. Through persistently making a choice to be happy, he finally finds lasting happiness through the advice of a friend that suggests he share his heart with others. This brings happiness to Hugo’s life and children learn that happiness is a choice they can make in theirs too!
Hugo the Happy Starfish and The Last Bully was about Hugo’s friends being bullied and hurt, while he watched helplessly. Hugo decides to form an Anti Bully club and soon the club starts filling with members that used to be bullies themselves. Every former bully found themselves in the role of victim, when someone bigger came along. Children learn that the way they treat others will soon be turned back on them, and they also learn that feelings are to be handled carefully and respectfully.
Ms. Lieberman is more than an author. For a reasonable fee, she will visit your school to read her books and teach about the importance of proper attitudes and the ability to choose them for yourself. More about that program and her books, as well as games and worksheets, can be found on her website www.MyStarfish.org. Hugo even has a blog!!
Ms. Lieberman believes that life skills and character traits are two of the most important lessons to teach children. I agree, and am thrilled to have found stories that reflect that. In fact, these are timeless lessons that adults can be reminded of from time to time as well!
